Just a Little Update...

Hello Everyone!

This last week on the base has been pretty normal. We have just had class and work duties. However, God is always showing up here. Whether that’s through worship, intercession, or just mealtime conversations. I find myself growing more and more in love with Him everyday. I am starting to see how God has changed me through my attitude towards others and my outlook on this whole experience.

I find it so peaceful here and easy to be with God. As I speak, two of my roomies, Lauren and Sarah, are having a worship session on the couch right next to me. It’s hard not to be in constant awe and worship of God and His creation here since our base is in a rural jungle area. I go to bed every night to the sound of crickets or thunder. Thailand is so incredibly beautiful. Yet it’s so different, which was hard for me at first, but I find myself adjusting and feeling more comfortable calling this place home and calling my classmates and the staff family.

This last Saturday we had a large barbeque at the base with all of the YWAM Chiang Mai staff. It was awesome getting to know a lot of the staff that live in town and being able to pig out on amazing American food like chicken and potato salad. I feel so blessed to be part of this community and it was great participating in their monthly update meeting. Through the meeting I found out that a large revival is happening in Northern Thailand and I am so excited to be apart of it! Everyday I get more and more eager for our two-month outreach at the end of our DTS. I know God is going to do amazing things!

I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. Please continue to pray for energy this next week, and know that I am always praying for all of you back home!

Blessings,

Hanna

Pictures at last!

I have come up with a brilliant idea!

Instead of rushing my blog posts every time I go to the Internet café, I am going to write out my posts ahead of time on word! I can’t believe it took me this long to figure this out, but now it allows me to write longer and more thought out posts.

Now for the updates. Life on our little base is going good. Today we started our first day of lecture, which means a more regular daily schedule. Last week we had a lot more free time because we were going through orientation, but now we have an hour-by-hour schedule. Breakfast is at 6:30, followed by quiet time, which is from 7:30-8:15. 8:15-9:15 is either worship or intercession. Then 9:30-12:30 is lecture. Lunch is at 12:30, followed by community responsibility (chores) from 1:30-3:30. 3:30-5 is free time, and 5-6 is sports time. Dinner is at 6, and then finally from 7-9 is lecture or small groups. We are definitely kept busy here, but they make sure we have plenty or time to spend with Jesus and friends.
Thankfully, they give us the entire weekend off. On Saturday, Sarah, Lauren, Stephanie (all westerners), Gam (our Thai friend who thinks she’s a westerner (: ), and I all ventured into Chiang Mai for a day of shopping and exploring the city. A majority of our day was spent in search of American restaurants and walking around lost, but we ended the day by going to Chiang Mai’s famous “Walking Street” night market. We then caught a song thaew (truck with seats and a cover in the bed) back to Mae Taeng. Our driver was not very nice and talked in a northern dialect that Gam had a hard time understanding. Long story short, we ended up in the back of a song thaew for almost 2 hours (the ride usually only takes 45 minutes) with 15 other people. Eventually we arrived in Mae Taeng and were able to hitch hike back to our base. It was definitely a day full of adventures, inside jokes, and bonding. God has truly blessed me with a wonderful family here at the base and I am so incredibly thankful.

On Sunday I was able to go to the Internet café and skype for three hours with family and friends in Bellingham (and Bethie in Amsterdam!). I felt so encouraged and had a great time sharing with them all of my adventures. I miss everyone so much, but I am feeling confident in my purpose here in Thailand. I know this is where I need to be right now and God has already stretched and grown me. I am hungry for more!

I do have some prayer requests for this week. I have breakfast duty, which means I have to get up at 5 am and make the whole base breakfast, so please be praying for good rest. Also, I just found out today that I have to get a $200 visa for our two week China outreach in November (a ridiculous amount of money for such a short time). I was not prepared for this visa therefore I didn’t budget for it. So I am going to try to do a bit of internet fundraising in the next couple weeks. If you feel led to give, please email me at hmbish@gmail.com and I will let you know how you can donate. If not, then please pray! Prayer is more important then finances.

Anyways, I pray that all of you are doing well, and I hope you enjoy the pictures I have posted.

Blessings!

Sawadiika!

My first week of school has gone great. It's been a relaxed week of orientations, games, and adventures. Yesterday the whole team went into the heart of Chiang Mai and we had an "Amazing Race." It was a four hour scavenger hunt all around the city. We were sweaty and exhausted by the end of it all but it was great to be able to see the city since my actual base is in Mae Taeng which is 45 minutes north of Chiang Mai. I am excited to start lecture next week and get on a more steady schedule.

The people in my DTS are all wonderful. There are 4 other western girls here along with 3 western boys. There are 7 Thai girls and 2 Thai guys. We all get along great despite the language barriers. Many of the Thais can speak some English and all the others are determined to learn. All of us westerners are determined to learn as much Thai as possible while we are here. So there is a mutual exchange of teaching languages among our base. This has really brought everyone on the base very close together, and the staff keeps telling us that they are encouraged to see how much we love each other already even though it's only been one week.

My apologies for not being able to update more often. Since I have to come to an internet cafe to get wifi, most of my time is spent talking on Skype. BUT! I am determined not to be one of those missionaries that stops blogging after a month, so I will try my hardest to remain faithful!

Also, please be praying for my health for my stomach has been bugging me lately.

Well I need to leave the cafe now but I will update again soon!

Blessings,
Hanna

Start of School

Today marked the first official day of my DTS! The Chiang Mai elder leaders all came to our 4 hour worship and prayer session this morning to pray over us. It was a very powerful and encouraging. To say the least I am excited for this school and to see how God changes me and my classmates.

The base does not have wifi. So if I want to go on the internet we have to walk or hitch hike to a coffee shop down the road. The owners are all very sweet and we enjoy the exercise.

Well, the coffee shop is actually closing down now so I have to go. But I promise I will be back on soon and give you guys more details and pictures!

I'm here!!!

สวัสดีทุกคน!  (Hello Everyone!)

I'm here in Chiang Mai, comfortable and safe. The leader of my DTS, Bruce Geske, picked me up from the airport last night right away. So I was able to go to his house, eat a piece of pizza (not what I was expecting to be my first meal), and crashed on the floor of his daughter's room. I will be staying at Bruce's house with his wife and 8 adorable kids for the next couple of nights, because we need to stay in town to pick up the other westerners before we go to the base which is about 45 minutes outside of Chiang Mai. They are a very hospitible family and I'm very well taken care of here.

For those of you who were praying that I'd have another western girl in my DTS that I can fellowship with, God has answered our prayer! 5 other western girls will be coming to the DTS, and all of them are American! It's really nice to have other people from the same country in my group so we can support each other through culture shock and homesickness. I am so excited to meet these young ladies as they start to fly in today and tomorrow. There are also 3 western guys coming. A German, Australian, and either a British or American (I can't remember which!) Be praying that we all form good friendships quickly including those with the 11 Thais that will also be in our group.

Also, I have a prayer request. I've woken up this morning with what feels like a throat cold. Please be praying for healing and good rest.

I hope all of you are doing well and I thank you for all of your prayers and support! I will post again once school starts next week.

Blessings,
Hanna
